PETITION TO THE ASSEMBLED HOUSE OF COMMONS ON SEX-SELECTIVE ABORTION
Whereas sex-selective abortion is a reprehensible practice that targets baby girls for female gendercide and represents discrimination against women in its most extreme form;
And whereas the Canadian Medical Association Journal (CMAJ) revealed that the targeting of baby girls for sex-selection termination is indeed taking place in Canada and that certain communities have a birth ratio as high as 136 boys to 100 girls, in contrast to the Canadian average of 105 boys to 100 girls;
And whereas the practice of sex-selection abortion in countries like China and India has caused such a critical gender imbalance in some regions that sex slavery and even “wife sharing” have become grave problems;
And whereas a recent poll found that 92% of Canadians believe sex-selective pregnancy termination should be illegal;
Therefore, we call upon party leaders and the assembled House of Commons to support Motion 408, by MP Mark Warawa, which reads: “That the House condemn discrimination against females occurring through sex-selective pregnancy termination.”
Note: CLC’s Ottawa lobbyist will hand-deliver this petition to the Prime Minister’s Office and to other party leaders.
